Building a Composite Deck with Trex Enhance Rocky Harbor and Signature Railing in Sioux Falls, SD

Finished 12x16 Deck, Black Trex Metal Railing & Trex Fascia for the deck parameter

Our first deck of the season this year was for a 12 foot deep, 16 foot wide deck and a 4x4 stair approach.

The original deck was made from cedar and had started to rot out in some key places.

  • One of the main posts had completely rotted out between the post and footing. So much so that the post wasn’t even touching the footing, but suspended and held in place by the other two posts in the main beam.

  • The second major issue was the stairs. Many of the deck boards had fallen off, making it unusable to step on. Additionally the stair stringers or supports had also started to rot significantly.

All told, it took us about 90 minutes to remove this deck.

Next we started in on major construction. All of our decks use the DiamondPier footings, unless the project calls for a different foundation.

Then came framing. We typically go the next size up in joists. Instead of using 2x8’s, we used 2x10’s for the joists and beam. This allows us to do a few things. It gives us more strength to the deck, and allows us to add in some additional blocking to help prevent the deck from racking back and forth, making it more stable.

Once framing inspection passed, we installed a composite deck board from Trex. The customer chose the color from their Enhance product line called, Rocky Harbor. They also went with the all black railing from the Trex Signature Railing product line.

Overall, with a few rain delays, the project took us about 7 days to complete.
